Southwest Junior High School
Athletics

The athletic teams at Southwest are competitive in every endeavor. Our student-athletes promote sportsmanship and pride both on the field and in the classroom. This page will continue to expand as we move into different seasons. The "Traveling with the Bulldogs" link has also been included to assist parents in finding where away athletic competitions will be held.

2010-2011 Cheerleading

Maureen Williams, Coach

Eighth grade girls are eligible to try out for Southwest cheerleading. The point of cheerleading is to encourage and support our school teams, as well as to set positive examples for fans. Southwest's cheerleading is divided into two different squads and Mrs. Williams sponsors all squads. The Fall Squad cheers for football. Our Winter Squad cheers for basketball. All members are expected to attend all scheduled practices and activities such as games. The squads meet three times a week, which includes home games.

Cheer clinics will be held on August 18-20 from 3:30-4:30. The following forms must be on file in the office prior to tryouts:

  • Physical Form (must be dated after May 1). Available on-line.
  • Yellow notarized insurance form. Available on-line.
  • Code of Conduct form. This form carries over from year to year, so if you've already filled one out prior to this year it's not necessary to fill out another one. Available on-line.
  • Additional forms (teacher recommendations, etc), which are included in the cheer packet.

Order Track Sweats Here

Orders are due by Friday, February 10!

Students interested in being part of the Southwest Middle School Track and Field team must attend an informational meeting before the first practice. The meetings will be in the Southwest gym at 3:15-4:00.

  • 7th graders will meet on Monday, February 27th.
  • 8th graders will meet on Tuesday, February 28th..

Parents are welcome to attend the informational meetings. If you have questions about Southwest Track and Field, contact Skip Bennett or Patricia Coffey at 832-5550.

Southwest Track and Field begins Monday, March 5th. Students who plan to participate in Bulldog Track need to prepare now so that they will be ready for the season. Each track and field participant must have a doctor’s physical dated after May 1, 2011. Besides the physical, each athlete must have a notarized medical/insurance authorization form. The forms are available in the Southwest office or on the SW website. If the student has already participated in other sports this year (including cheerleading, but not including 7th grade football), the physical and insurance should already be on file. If you are not sure whether your son or daughter has the proper paper work, you may call Debbie Rhoton at 832-5550 during school hours. Our track team practices each day after school until 5:00. There will be a study hall on Wednesday afternoons from 1:30-3:00 for track athletes to go to before practice, if they choose. If there is no school, there will be no practice (example: Friday before Spring Break). There will be no practice during Spring Break or on the weekends.

Anybody who's been at Southwest for even a short time knows that we have a lot to be proud of. Our academics, extracurriculars, students, and staff are second to none. Many of our students are also athletes, and everyone knows that our sports teams this year have had great success. But of all the exceptional sports accomplishments of Bulldog athletes over the years, none have been more numerous than those registered in track and field.

Track and field is for everyone. Student-athletes can match their skills to many different events, and participants don't have to worry about a try-out. In fact, anyone who maintains good grades and follows all team guidelines is automatically on the team. Our track program becomes more popular every year. In the early days of Southwest, approximately 100 freshmen, 8th graders, and 7th graders were on the team. Now we expect annual turnouts of 225 or more. An impressive tradition is the emergence of those 225 navy blue-clad runners and throwers from our locker room before a home meet. That's an avalanche that strikes fear into even the most worthy opponents.

The Bulldog coaching staff is the best. Our coaches have many years of experience with our city-championship track program, but even more significantly, they are dedicated and truly enjoy what they do. Join your friends on the track team, and we will have another great year!

David Drennan - Head Coach

The Southwest wrestling program is open to all 7th and 8th grade students. The season starts in October and will be finished in December before winter break. The team practices every day from 3:30 to 5:30.

Early in the season, athletes will learn basic wrestling moves. As the season goes along, different styles will be added to the basic moves. Each wrestler is encouraged to learn what move works best for them. Finally, we will add different variations of each move to become more successful on the mat.

Matches are held for the 7th & 8th graders throughout the season. Wrestlers will be matched up with opponents that are somewhat equal in ability and weight class.

There will be a short meeting September 28th at 1:45.  At the meeting we will discuss and pass out Physical Forms, Yellow Insurance Forms, and the Code of Conduct, team schedule.

  • Physical Form (must be dated after May 1). Available on-line.
  • Yellow notarized insurance form. Available on-line.
  • Code of Conduct form. This form carries over from year to year, so if you've already filled one out prior to this year it's not necessary to fill out another one. Available on-line.
  • Head injury form. Available in the office and on-line.

All forms must be turned in before any student athlete can began practice.  Equipment: headgear, singlet, sweats will be check out before the first match.  You may purchase your own headgear and wrestling shoes (I do carry some used shoes, but not all sizes are available)
